Living Wills or Advanced Directives allow you to define how you want
to be treated should you lose mental capacity in the future.
Living Wills sometimes known a s Advanced Directives or Advance
statements aren't legally binding, but health professionals do have
to take them into account when deciding on a course of action.
Family and friends can also use them as evidence of your wishes.
You might include within these documents what treatment you would
be happy to have, and in what circumstances you would want
particular treatments withheld. You may also include details
of someone you might like to be consulted about the treatment your
are to receive at the time a decision needs to be made.
You can make a Living will as long as you have the mental
capacity to do so. You need to be competent to make the decision in
question, not necessarily to make other decisions.
